This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, optimizing, and sustaining welding processes used to manufacture structural steel products. The position will focus primarily on structural steel GMAW-P pulse welding applications, while also supporting TIG welding processes used throughout the plant. The Welding Engineer will work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Design Engineering, Supply Chain, and Safety teams to ensure weld quality, improve productivity, support new product launches, reduce manufacturing costs, and maintain compliance with applicable welding codes, customer requirements, and internal standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the facility subject matter expert for welding processes, welding equipment, weld quality, and welding standards.
- Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures, work instructions, process standards, WPSs, PQRs, and supporting weld documentation as required.
- Lead weld process development, optimization, and troubleshooting for structural steel fabrication operations.
- Support robotic and manual GMAW-P pulse welding processes and provide technical support for TIG welding applications.
- Establish and maintain weld parameters, fixture requirements, consumable selection, shielding gases, preheat/interpass requirements, and process controls.
- Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for weld defects including porosity, lack of fusion, undercut, distortion, spatter, cracking, burn-through, and dimensional variation.
- Support new product launches by reviewing designs for weldability, manufacturability, quality, and production efficiency.
- Collaborate with Design Engineering and Quality to ensure welding requirements, welding symbols, inspection criteria, and acceptance standards are clearly defined.
- Evaluate and implement improvements to welding equipment, fixtures, tooling, automation, robotic welding cells, and welding consumables.
- Coordinate installation, startup, validation, and commissioning of welding equipment, tooling, and related process changes.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to improve safety, quality, throughput, labor efficiency, material usage, and overall welding line performance.
