Modine’s Advanced Thermal Systems (ATS) organization is looking for a talented individual to join the Quality team, owning and promoting quality in new product development, working closely with our engineering team.  This is a critical role as we continue to enter new markets and customer segments and develop our next generation solutions aimed at the Commercial Electric Vehicle market. This is a high compliance quality position with primary customer contracts in the transportation/automotive and aerospace industries.

As the Product Development Quality Engineer, you will ensure the Quality for various thermal management systems and electric components. You will report to the Director of Quality and assure the successful execution of development plans that support compliance with internal processes and customer requirements and collaborate on process improvement initiatives for our portfolio of systems. You must have a passion for solving complex problems and providing operable solutions; act with minimal direction and on your own initiative; and be adaptable as you will work on a variety of applications and systems.  

This role will work closely with our engineering teams to meet objectives, leading a cross-functional team in the development and execution of new product quality assurance plans.  

This is an individual contributor role and will include close collaboration with the quality teams at our customers.  The Product Development Quality Engineer is responsible for championing ISO 26262 functional safety, ISO 21434 product cybersecurity and Automotive SPICE in ATS as a Subject Matter Expert while adhering to our Quality Management Systems (AS9100, ISO9000, IATF16949).

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise and guidance to the teams on APQP process, FMEA development, pre-production and production Control Plan development, etc.
  • Act as Quality representative on New Product Development projects.  Coordinate all quality activities related to assigned projects.  Act as support to the Program Manager.
  • Ensure all necessary activities are completed before projects are presented for movement to the next milestone.
  • Manage problem solving (root cause analysis, corrective action) for product design related issues.
  • Monitor and audit all aspects of new product development including planning, design and development, configuration management, verification and validation, and transition to production 
  • Assure that the development life cycle and the activities that occur in each phase are compliant with the approved plans, customer requirements, and Quality System requirements
  • Monitor and witness verification and validation activities for compliance with approved plans and to ensure anomalies are tracked and results are repeatable
  • Identify areas for process improvement and support process improvement initiatives that drive process, product, and system quality
  • Serve as a quality liaison in the transition from development to production
  • Provide oversight for new product development by suppliers to ensure end product meets ATS Quality Standards
  • Generate metrics and trends for managing risk and communicating project readiness for safety critical operations
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and make recommendations to enhance the quality of new product designs 
  • Monitor and audit complex electronic hardware development activities

  • Create and execute appropriate quality plans, project plans, test strategies and processes for development activities in concert with the master project management schedule
  • Define validation plan (DVP&R), tools and process for quality assurance of the product
  • Audit all Work Products to ensure compliance to Automotive SPICE, ISO 26262, ISO 21434, and ATS internal requirements.  Alert Management of any deficiencies that need to be addressed.
  • Show creativity and initiative to improve product design and effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate within short release cycles
     

Required Education & Qualifications

  • 6+ years industry experience in engineering field with at least 3 years in a quality engineer role 
  • 3+ years experience in auditing and assuring new product development process compliance
  • 3+ years experience identifying process-related problems, performing root cause analysis and managing corrective actions
  • BS in engineering required, preferably electrical
  • Familiarity with CAN Bus desired.
  • Expert on APQP, FMEA, and Control Plans.
  • Working knowledge of requirements for ISO 21434 product cybersecurity and ISO 26262 Functional Safety desired
  • Working knowledge of Automotive SPICE desired
  • Knowledge of quality/reliability concepts and their application on product development
  • Experience with quality system requirements: ISO 9000, IATF 16949 and/or AS9100D.
  • Technical skills required to understand work done by the team to propose new methodologies for approaching work
  • Ability to communicate technical or non-technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated history of delivering results in a matrixed organization, leveraging representatives from different departments, organizations, cultures and embracing diversity.
  • Proactive working style with the ability to adapt to change
