Position Description

The SQE works with suppliers, together with Buyers, Application Engineering and Plant personnel, to assist in achieving high levels of suppliers’ quality performance.  Activities may include evaluation of new suppliers’ capabilities, assisting in resolving serious and/or recurring quality issues, developing manufacturing and quality systems for new component supply, and reducing costs. The SQE will interface with employees at all levels of Modine and Supplier organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Overall:

  • Act as an advocate for Modine to maintain and/or develop the quality and technical capabilities of our strategic suppliers to support long term Modine quality and business needs.
  • Participate as an active member of commodity strategy teams in development of commodity strategies and plans to support.  
  • Define and communicate expectations with suppliers in areas of quality, capacity management, operational excellence, and delivery.
  • Implement supplier development-related standard practices. Work closely with cross-functional partners as well as stay abreast of industry standard and customer-specific requirements. Monitor changes and future enhancements in the supplier development and supplier quality fields.
  • Lead Supplier manufacturing continuous improvement projects by collaborating with suppliers on process improvement and value enhancement opportunities by partnering with them to implement best practices and drive continuous improvement.
  • Participate on New Product Introduction teams to ensure that supplier quality meets the required standards.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams in the development of new products or changes related to current products in meeting customer requirements.
  • Conduct supplier validation audits.  Drives closure coordination of reported non-conformities.  Selectively engages with Key Suppliers to drive quality improvement through qualification and training efforts, including first article requirements and quality scorecard business reviews. 
  • Conduct benchmarking studies to determine best practices/designs and future trends.

Current Supplier Quality:

  • Lead resolution of significant and/or recurring supplier quality issues. Using knowledge gained from cross-supplier best practice experience, assist supplier in problem resolution, corrective action implementation and verification to prevent recurrence.
  • Utilize benchmarking to define “best in class” suppliers/processes and close gaps.  Utilize ISO 9001 and/or TS16949 based supplier audits to identify and prioritize areas for improvement.
  • Develop and utilize metrics to continually evaluate supplier strength by commodity. Develop and execute action plans for the lowest performing suppliers through leading on-site supplier development activities and/or on-boarding of new/replacement suppliers. Ensure Approve Supplier List (ASL) is updated regularly to reflect latest supply base status.

New Supplier Evaluation and Development:

  • Support execution of commodity strategies through the research, identification, and evaluation of new suppliers 

Required Education & Qualifications

  • 3 - 5 years engineering or supplier quality experience 
  • Lead assessor in ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, or AS 9100
  • Experienced in establishing and implementing strategic plans for supplier quality and supplier development policies, procedures and plans
  • Experienced in facilitating supplier quality improvement
  • Strong project management and leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Expert in the use of AIAG Tools:
  • Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Control Plans
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) 
  • Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) 
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
  • Proficient in the use of problem solving skills
  • Able to work independently
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, ASQ Certified Quality Auditor, ASQ Certified Quality Manager preferred.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification preferred.
  • Travel 25-50%
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or other technical field.
