Position Description

The Product Engineer reports directly to the Engineering Supervisor at our SE Wisconsin facility supporting the rapidly expanding Data Center vertical. In this role, you will design, develop, test, document, and support production for mission-critical Data Center Cooling products. You will play a key part in new product introduction (NPI) and ongoing product enhancements to ensure best-in-class performance and reliability for hyperscale and enterprise data center clients.

Key Responsibilities

New Product Introduction & Customer Program Execution

  • Develop, compile, and deliver comprehensive technical documentation and customer submittal packages.
  • Execute assigned engineering launch activities for awarded programs, ensuring on-time delivery and adherence to engineering schedules.
  • Release production-ready designs, bills of materials (BOMs), and detailed engineering drawings for prototype fabrication and mass production.
  • Coordinate and support all required customer acceptance testing and regulatory compliance certifications in the laboratory and in the field.

Product Design, Modeling & Technical Analysis

  • Design and evaluate cooling systems and components by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science.
  • Collaborate closely with CAD designers to develop robust 3D models and manufacturing drawings for specialized data center cooling equipment.
  • Interpret and leverage Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation results to guide design decisions as needed.

Manufacturing Support, Sustaining Engineering & VA/VE

  • Drive post-launch engineering activities, including design optimizations, manufacturability improvements, and assembly cycle-time reductions.
  • Support engineering change requests (ECR) and engineering change orders (ECO) to resolve active shop-floor manufacturing inquiries from conception through full implementation.
  • Lead preliminary design feasibility studies and technical evaluations for Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VA/VE) and Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFA).

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Travel

  • Partner cross-functionally with Modine regional teams, plant manufacturing operations, quality assurance, sourcing, vendors, and end customers.
  • Travel domestically or internationally (up to 10%) to visit customer sites, suppliers, and testing facilities.

Required Education & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal/Fluid Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline with 1–3+ years of engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Core Fundamentals: Strong educational background and practical foundation in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, psychrometrics, and material mechanics.

Preferred Qualifications & Attributes

  • HVAC/Thermal Experience: Direct experience with heat transfer equipment, refrigeration cycles, air handling, or other HVAC systems, including structural and sheet metal design.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA), along with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement (CI) principles.
  • CAD & Simulation: Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling software and the ability to review and interpret CFD and FEA data.
  • Quality & Change Processes: Familiarity with formal Engineering Change Request (ECR) and Change Order (ECO) workflows.
  • Safety & Ethics: Strong commitment to "Safety-First" design ethics aimed at mitigating workplace and operational hazards through engineering controls.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent analytical problem-solving skills, proactive communication, and the agility to collaborate across global, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Tools: High proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
